Water Meter

A water meter measures how much water your household or property uses. It's your main tool for checking usage and detecting leaks.

How to Find Your Water Meter

Location

  •  Usually in a concrete or plastic box near the curb, sidewalk, or in the basement (cold climates).
  • You may need a tool or screwdriver to lift the lid.
  • Be careful—there may be spiders, insects, or debris inside.
  • sometimes hidden by grass or bushes

How to identify and Read a Water Meter

There are two common types:

1. Analog/Dial Meters

  • Has a sweep hand (like a clock) and a series of dials or digits.
  • Sweep hand: One full rotation = usually 10 gallons (check your meter’s unit).
  • Odometer-style dial: Shows total water use in cubic feet or gallons.
  • Leak indicator: A small triangle or star that spins when even a tiny amount of water flows.

2. Digital Meters

  • Displays numbers electronically.
  • May require a flashlight or button press to activate screen.
  • Shows total usage (in gallons or cubic feet), and sometimes flow rate (gallons per minute).

Using Your Water Meter to Check for Leaks

Identify a leak

  1. Turn off all water: No taps, toilets, irrigation, etc.
  2. Check the leak indicator:
    • Spinning? You have a leak.

  1. Record the meter reading.
  2. Wait 30 minutes to 2 hours (no water use).
  3. Check reading again:
    • If numbers increased, water is flowing somewhere—probably a hidden leak.
